Japanese Wikipedia states that Western April Fools' Day was transmitted to Japan during the Taishō period, spreading under the literal translation 四月馬鹿 (shigatsu baka, 'April fool'); the Sino-Japanese term 万愚節 (mangusetsu) is also used. A recurring annual custom. No specific year is documented, so 1912 is given as the first year of the Taishō era, the earliest possible date, not a confirmed one.
