ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

A dare circulating in athletic circles was redirected to ALS fundraising in July 2014 by Pat Quinn and Pete Frates, both living with the disease. Participants filmed themselves dumping ice water over their heads, nominated three others, and donated. It drew roughly 17 million participants and raised $115 million for the ALS Association against $2.8 million in the same period the prior year. It established the nominate-and-film stunt template that later challenge formats inherited.
