Le poisson d'avril à la RTBF - canular annuel récurrent
1974
Belgian public broadcaster RTBF has run televised April 1st hoaxes for four decades; this is a recurring annual practice, not a single event. The earliest documented in RTBF's own retrospective is 1974: the National Bank of Belgium would issue two separate currencies, a Walloon franc and a Flemish franc, the same communitarian anxiety Bye Bye Belgium exploited 32 years later. Later editions include the invented sport of 'kayak à pattes' (1984) and genetically modified carnivorous trout at Mirwart (2008).
