A meme in which teenagers filmed themselves biting into laundry detergent capsules spread across YouTube and social platforms in early 2018. US poison control centres logged 86 cases of intentional ingestion by teenagers between 1 and 21 January, against roughly 200 for the whole of 2017. YouTube began removing videos tagged with the challenge on 17 January and issuing strikes.
