Burger King's Whopper Detour

Not a hoax but a real promotion: from 4-12 December 2018, Burger King geofenced more than 14,000 US McDonald's locations so that anyone coming within about 600 feet received a notification offering a Whopper for one cent, orderable only through the Burger King app, which then routed them to the nearest Burger King. The app was downloaded over 1.5 million times in nine days. It is frequently cited as the model of a prank that was actually deliverable.
