The Calaveras Skull

A human skull said to have been found in a Californian mine shaft was presented as evidence that humans had lived in North America in the Pliocene. It had been planted by miners as a joke on a local geologist, and the joke outlived their intention, the skull was cited in scientific literature for decades.
