Wendy's answered a request for memes with Pepe drawn as its own mascot on January 2nd, 2017, then deleted the tweet after criticism, saying "our community manager was unaware of the recent evolution of the Pepe meme's meaning". A brand discovering mid-post that the frog had become contested.
