Yves Le Prieur at the Tourelles swimming pool in August 1926. His set was genuinely self-contained but used constant flow, not a demand valve: air ran continuously and the diver worked a tap by hand, so dive times were very short. That distinction is what the Cousteau-Gagnan regulator resolved.
