Arthur Mafokate - Kaffir (Radio Mix)
1995
The record that broke kwaito nationally, selling over half a million copies: house slowed to a township walking tempo with a Sotho/Zulu vocal that throws the apartheid slur back at the people who used it. Kwaito is filed as hip-hop almost everywhere; it is house, by the testimony of the men who made it, and this is its first mass-market hit. Arthur Mafokate came out of Soweto and built the 999 label on the back of it.
