Ultra Naté - Free, live on Top of the Pops
JUL 11 1997
Ultra Naté performing "Free" on BBC's Top of the Pops in July 1997, the moment a Baltimore club record built on the New York vocal-house lineage crossed onto British primetime television. The song's gospel-shaped release, a Black woman singing about being free to do what she wants, is exactly the emotional register house inherited from the Garage and the Loft. Period broadcast footage, re-uploaded decades later.
