1571 - A 16th-century depiction of Sazan. Sazan, long known to Venetian and Ottoman mariners guarding the Bay of Vlorë, as drawn in a 16th-century Mediterranean chart. For centuries it was a strategic waypoint at the mouth of the Adriatic long before it became a fortress.
1914 - The Italian occupation of Saseno, 1914. Italian forces landing to take Sazan, which they called "Saseno", on 30 October 1914. The claim was recognised by the 1915 Treaty of London, and the island became the Italian Royal Navy's southernmost outpost.
1923 - Italian stamps overprinted for Saseno. Italian postage stamps overprinted "SASENO" for use on the occupied island in 1923, a small artifact of the decades Sazan spent flying the Italian flag.
2015-08-10 - The island opens to tourists. In 2015 Sazan was opened to limited tourism for the first time, boat tours bringing visitors to wander the derelict barracks, bunkers and tunnels of the once-secret military island, a decade before it became the centre of a national fight.
2016-01-01 - The Soviet split - and a sealed island. When Enver Hoxha broke with Moscow and aligned Albania with Mao's China in 1961, the Soviets were expelled and Sazan became a closed Albanian military zone, sealed off from the public for the rest of the communist era and beyond.

Sazan is also rumoured, never confirmed, to have housed a chemical and biological weapons facility; gas masks still lie scattered in the abandoned tunnels.
2021-06-27 - The Soviet submarine base. After 1947, Sazan and the neighbouring Pasha Liman base became a forward Soviet naval outpost, home to Whiskey-class submarines and thousands of soldiers, the USSR's deepest foothold on the Mediterranean during the early Cold War.

Compare it to Costa Navarino in Greece, a resort that took 27 years of planning, a ministerial decree establishing a legal zone in 2001, and full environmental studies before a single machine moved. 😅 Zvërnec had bulldozers in the ground before a completed project existed. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Albania was also just elected President of Forest Europe (the continent’s most important forest and biodiversity policy platform) for the next four years. The 45 countries that voted for that presidency will be reading about SPAK freezing assets linked to the land deal. They will be reading about machinery operating in a protected zone without an EIA. They will be reading about private security beating protesters while police watched. Leading European environmental diplomacy abroad while bypassing environmental law at home is not a success story! It is a contradiction. 😵‍💫 Note: the €1.4 billion figure in the video refers to the Sazan island project. The total development including Vjosa-Narta is even higher, at to €4 billion. 💰💰💰 Once again, I’m not against investments, development, and luxury resorts.
