Maria the Jewess - first known alchemist

Maria the Jewess (Maria Hebraea), described by Zosimos, is the earliest alchemist whose name survives. She is credited with inventing key laboratory apparatus, the tribikos still and the kerotakis, and the water-bath that still bears her name (bain-marie).
