Loreline, a collaborative story platform

Loreline (loreline.live) is a collaborative story platform. Anyone can upload footage, photos, and clips and assemble them into a “loreline”, a living visual story that plays back in chronological order, with scenes ordered by the real date they happened. Public lorelines can be contributed to by many people, so the story evolves over time.

On Loreline you can create your own story, browse and watch public lorelines across topics like history, music, sports, film, and culture, contribute footage to open community stories, and embed any public loreline into a blog or article. Explore public stories by topic at https://loreline.live/explore.

What is Loreline?

Loreline (loreline.live) is a collaborative story platform where anyone can upload footage, photos, and clips and assemble them into a "loreline", a living visual story that plays back in chronological order, with scenes ordered by the real date they happened.

How does Loreline work?

Each loreline is a timeline of scenes (photos, video clips, or embedded media such as YouTube). Scenes are placed by their real capture date, so the finished loreline plays back as a chronological story. Multiple people can contribute to the same public loreline, so the story grows and evolves over time.

What can you do on Loreline?

You can create your own story from scratch, browse and watch public lorelines on topics like history, music, sports, film, and culture, contribute footage to open community stories, and embed any public loreline into a blog or article.

Is Loreline the same as the open-source interactive-fiction language?

No. loreline.live is a collaborative story platform for building chronological visual stories. It is unrelated to any same-named programming or interactive-fiction language.

Burning Man, 4,221 moments. Burning Man Project is the nonprofit that brings more joy, awe, and connection to the world.

W3OW, 27 moments. This is a Loreline created for the most colourful van you'll ever lay your eyes on. A driving piece of art designed and created by Lindert Steegen that has been serving as my mobile office in which I have created Loreline. Originally this van served as a Belgian ambulance dating back to 1993 before being converted to a camper by the second owner. I have bought the van from the third owner whom used it as a camper and to transport his motorcycles. Do you know of any lore to add or have you captured my van while I was travelling in it around Europe? Make sure to add the footage to my timeline and maybe I'll add you to W3OW's Loreline making you a part of it's story!

Berlin, 232 moments. A documentary loreline of Berlin, Prussian capital, Weimar wildness, the dark Reich years, the Wall and its fall, and the techno-soaked, art-drenched, currywurst-fuelled metropolis it became. Thematic chapters across the city’s history and culture.

Spinning Cat, 1,240 moments. The meme with the deepest lore ever documented.

2Pac, 485 moments. Tupac Amaru Shakur, 1971-1996. His mother was on trial with the Panther 21 while she was pregnant with him; he studied ballet and Shakespeare in Baltimore; he made four albums in five years and one of them went to number one while he was in prison. He was shot dead in Las Vegas at twenty-five and the case stayed open for twenty-seven years. Built from the interview record, because he talked more, and more carefully, than almost anyone else of his generation.

RAD Archive, 7,137 moments. A mirror of radarchive.org by Ludwig Vonmesser (Codex Vloriensis). 7,139 annotated music videos spanning 1966–2026, regrouped by genre family. Every scene is a YouTube embed of the original video; descriptions retain RAD's curatorial annotations.

Ibiza, 737 moments. The White Isle, the whole story of Ibiza, from a Phoenician trading post founded around 654 BC to the club capital of the world. The walled old town of Dalt Vila and the salt flats of Ses Salines; the myths of Es Vedrà and the sunset ritual at Café del Mar; the 1960s freaks and the hippie markets; Pacha, Amnesia, Space, Privilege, DC10, Ushuaïa and Hï; DJ Alfredo, Carl Cox, Circoloco and Solomun; the Balearic beat that lit the Second Summer of Love and the EDM era that followed; the beaches and boat parties, the villages and the gastronomy, Manumission and Club Tropicana and all the myth and excess of the island that never sleeps.

The Belgian Sound, 674 moments. The story of Belgian electronic music and club culture, from the early-1980s machine-pulse of EBM and the late-80s invention of New Beat, through the techno temples of Fuse, La Rocca, Cherry Moon and Café d'Anvers and the R&S and Bonzai labels that conquered Europe, to Tomorrowland, Stromae, Charlotte de Witte and Amelie Lens. One of the most influential, and least-credited, dance-music cultures in the world.

fritz-kola, 44 moments. The cult German indie cola. Founded in Hamburg in 2002 by two students with €7,000, the famous two-faces logo and the highest caffeine the law allowed, fritz-kola grew from a phenomenon in Hamburg’s bars into one of Europe’s best-known independent soft drinks, and a fixture of clubs, bars, festivals and parties everywhere.

Psytrance, 629 moments. Psychedelic trance began as a DJ practice on a beach. Through the 1970s and 80s the freaks who wintered in Anjuna and Vagator swapped guitars for tape decks, and by the early 1990s the edits they played at the full-moon parties had become a genre of its own, Goa trance, with its own labels in London and Tel Aviv and its own canon of records. Then it split, over and over: the Israeli full-on that filled arenas, the darkpsy and forest strains that went the other way into the night, the patient progressive sound, the psychill of the chillout dome, and a global festival circuit from Boom in Portugal to Ozora in Hungary to Universo Paralello on a Brazilian beach. This is that whole evolution, the records, the parties, the archival footage and the people.

Porsche, 368 moments

Techno, 994 moments. A genre invented by Black teenagers in Detroit and its suburbs on machines the Japanese companies that built them considered commercial failures. Juan Atkins put out "Alleys of Your Mind" in 1981; the word was in local use by 1984, and a British label fixed it to the market in 1988 after the Detroit artists voted down a plan to sell them as house. Radio carried it first: the Electrifying Mojo was playing their mixes on air by 1981, inside a Black Detroit format that ran Kraftwerk next to P-Funk, and Jeff Mills was The Wizard on WJLB before he was Jeff Mills. It reached Europe and found rooms that suited it, in a Frankfurt club from 1984 and a West Berlin one from 1988, before the Wall came down and handed Berlin a city full of empty buildings. Since then: a vault under a department store, a parade that grew to a million people and ended in twenty-one deaths that no court ever assigned responsibility for, a power station in Friedrichshain, and a German heritage listing in 2024 that most of the press reported wrong. This archive runs from 1981 to 2026 and treats Detroit as the centre it actually is.

Moby, 570 moments. Moby, Richard Melville Hall, from a Connecticut squat to selling twenty million records. The whole forty-year arc: the hardcore-punk kid, the early-90s rave hero of "Go", the ambitious "Everything Is Wrong", the guitar detour of "Animal Rights", and then Play, the 1999 album that licensed every track and sold twelve million, through 18, Hotel, the David-Lynch-directed "Wait for Me", the Void Pacific Choir, the orchestral Reprise, and his latest work. The music, the videos, the live shows, the story behind the songs, and the lifelong vegan-and-animal-rights activism.

Digital Art, 287 moments. A chronicle of digital and algorithmic art from cybernetics (1948) to the present. 328 moments, Norbert Wiener's book; the cybernetic tortoises; the first oscilloscope photographs; mainframe plotter art; demoscene cracktros; net.art; software art; CryptoPunks; Fidenza. Built from The DA Oracle by Ludwig Vonmesser, a folio of the Codex Vloriensis.

DNB, 579 moments. It starts with a six-second drum break from a 1969 B-side. Sped up and chopped over sound-system bass at the hardcore raves of the early nineties, it became jungle, a music built in London bedrooms, cut to dubplate, and broadcast from tower-block pirate stations before any label would touch it. By 1995 it had a canon of its own: Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Photek, Roni Size. Then it split and kept splitting, the dark precision of techstep and neurofunk, the melodic warmth of liquid, the rolling weight of jump-up, and turned into an unusually label-shaped music, where Metalheadz, Hospital, RAM and V Recordings each stood for a sound. This is that whole arc: the raves, the records, the MCs and pirate radio, and the festivals from Rampage in Antwerp to Let It Roll.

Pokémon, 573 moments. The full story of the biggest media franchise on Earth, from Satoshi Tajiri's bug-collecting dream and the 1996 Game Boy originals through the Pokémania that swept the planet, the trading-card crazes, twenty-five years of games and anime, the summer the whole world played Pokémon GO, Ash Ketchum finally becoming World Champion, and the card-collecting mania of today, told through the real commercials, news reports, trailers, tournament finals and photographs of each moment.

Eurovision, 340 moments. A chronicle of 333 defining Eurovision Song Contest moments, from the first contest in Lugano (1956) to the most recent grand final. Each scene a story: the artist, the song, the night, the country, what it meant. Built from Eurovision Oracle by Ludwig Vonmesser, a folio of the Codex Vloriensis.

Prague's story, 138 moments. An illuminated chronicle of Prague, beside the Vltava, from Bořivoj's hilltop fortress in the ninth century to the Velvet Republic. Built from Chronica Pragensia by Ludwig Vonmesser (https://prague-oracle.vercel.app/) with thematic regrouping into city-lore segments. 135 folios → 135 scenes.

Los Angeles, 441 moments. From a Tongva village by a river to a Spanish pueblo of 1781, to the oil-and-orange boom town, the dream factory of Hollywood, the city that stole a valley's water, the megacity of freeways and sprawl, Los Angeles is many cities at once. This is its story told in themes: the founding, the water, the movies, the skyline, the Olympics, the uprisings, the earthquakes and fires, the sound of the streets, the car, and the city today. Every scene sits at its real moment in time.

Pink Palace, 1,107 moments. The backpacker hostel above Agios Gordios beach on Corfu. Founded by Dr. George around 1985, it grew from a restaurant on the sand into a pink complex on the hillside that Let's Go was sending travellers to by 1990, with the ouzo circle, the plate smashing, the cliff jump and the toga night. Built from the hostel's own archive, its Instagram, and the free photographic record of the Corfiot coast around it.
